Washington Youth Tour

Each year, Kenergy sends six students on an all-expense-paid trip titled the Washington Youth Tour. The mid-June trip is coordinated through the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives in Louisville.  You may read more about this tour by clicking here.

Students will see every major monument, cruise the Potomac River, visit the Holocaust Museum, spend a day at the Smithsonian, tour Capitol Hill, hear outdoor concerts and much, much more.

To enter the Washington Youth Tour, students must live in a house powered by Kenergy Corp.  Whether students live with grandparents or other members of their families does not matter, as long as the house is powered by Kenergy. Students living with guardians or in foster care may be required to have a signed letter stating their home is powered by Kenergy.

Entries for Washington Youth Tour must be received no later than midnight on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.  To enter, a student must supply his or her name, parents' names (or the names of the Kenergy members with whom they live), address, phone number (student and parents), school name and e-mail address.  That information must be submitted via e-mail to Jeanette Weedman at jweedman@kenergycorp.com.

By midnight on Friday, Feb. 14, applicants must turn in a 1,000-word essay.  The subject of the essay may be any subject about which the student is passionate.  Students should select topics wisely as the subject is part of the judging criteria.  Essays are submitted to Jeanette Weedman via e-mail.

Late essays will not be judged. Essays longer than 1,000 words will not be judged.

Essays must be typed in Times Roman font no smaller than 11 point.  Essays must be double-spaced.

Students should type their names and contact information in the top, right corner of their essays.  This information and the title of the essay will not be included in the 1,000-word limit.

A panel of judges will select the six winners in March.  All students will receive notification of the winners.

All Washington Youth Tour winners must go to Frankfort for an overnight trip in April.  Kenergy pays for this trip as well.  If a student cannot attend the Frankfort trip, he or she will not be allowed to go on the Washington trip in June.

Washington Youth Tour does not coincide with the Governor Scholar program.

DISCLAIMER: Washington Youth Tour awards will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by Kenergy.  The panel’s decision is final.  All materials, images, resumes, essays and applications submitted by the applicant become the sole and absolute property of Kenergy.  It is the sole decision and discretion of Kenergy to disqualify any applicant who does not comply with any of the entry and participation rules as set forth by the co-op.
