New technology enhances service, reliability

By President and CEO Greg Starheim

Kenergy’s management team continuously looks for ways to improve service to members, to strengthen system reliability and to operate more efficiently.

I am excited to announce an upcoming upgrade to Kenergy’s electric system that will achieve all those objectives.

This year, Kenergy will undergo a replacement of existing meters with a new digital advanced metering system.

Kenergy is the only cooperative in Kentucky – and one of the few nationwide — that has not implemented this technology. While the co-op’s current meters meet the Kentucky Public Service Commission’s minimum operational standards, much of this equipment is more than 30 years old and doesn’t provide the ability for Kenergy to offer the best-in-class service our members expect of us.

During the past three decades, meter technology has advanced tremendously. It allows utilities to detect voltage fluctuations and locate outages more precisely, which can reduce the co-op’s costs. In many cases, problems can be fixed before members even know an issue exists.

When this project is complete, your cooperative will have a state-of-the-art meter system that can deliver power more efficiently, provide useful information to members, improve reliability and help contain costs.

As you know, Kenergy has more than 56,000 meters in 14 counties. We expect the process of changing meters will take up to 12 months. We plan to begin in June 2015.

In the meantime, taking advantage of new technology is another way Kenergy demonstrates its commitment to providing safe and reliable electricity at affordable prices. We are proud to provide this system enhancement to our member-owners.
