Need help with your utility bills? Assistance is now available on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible Kenergy members. Kentucky Community Action Agencies are accepting applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Subsidy Component. 

The program runs through December 16th or until designated funds are depleted. The previous LIHEAP program ran out of funding before the deadline, and fewer funds are available this year compared to last year. These funds will likely be depleted before December 16th, so apply now.

As a member-owned cooperative, Kenergy is here for you. If LIHEAP funds are not available and you are having trouble paying your bill, please contact us at 800.844.4832 so we can work with you and identify potential resources. 

Alamon, a pole inspection contractor for Kenergy, will begin inspecting poles Wednesday, October 5th. Each wooden pole Kenergy owns, or is attached to, will be inspected to ensure there are no hazards. Inspectors check for decay, insects, cracks, holes, age, and any damage members may have caused.

You may see trucks in your area bearing a ‘Kenergy Contractor’ magnet. Inspectors will also have an Alamon picture ID with them. Inspectors will be working during daylight hours only. Don’t be alarmed if you see the contractors parked for a few hours and/or riding from pole-to-pole on an all-terrain vehicle.

Inspection areas include Centertown, Sacramento, Beech Grove, Hanson, Onton, and Nuckels.

Your electric cooperative will be conducting a survey to assess the changing dynamics of today’s energy consumer. The survey gathers information on your household’s use of energy so we can adequately prepare for the future energy demands of our membership. 

A random sample of members will be selected to participate in the project. Your input is extremely important! Survey links will be emailed to members in August. If you receive a survey, please take a moment to complete it at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and efforts regarding this important project. 

A random computerized drawing of 356 applicants was held July 1st for three (3) $1,000 scholarships and twenty-four (24) $500 scholarships. Scholarships can be used for tuition, fees, campus housing, textbooks, computers, school supplies, and other costs directly related to the recipient’s education.

Ryan Hammack of Clay has been elected to the District 3 position on the Kenergy board of directors.  Mr. Hammack challenged Chris Mitchell, who has represented District 3 since 1997.

Mike Hazelwood was elected to the District 5 position.  Mr. Hazelwood and Tom McFarland, both of Henderson, ran for the District 5 seat previously represented by Bill Denton who resigned from the board in February.

Incumbent Craig Roberts, representing District 1, faced no opposition and will retain his seat for another three-year term on Kenergy’s Board. 

A vendor for Kenergy will be performing network maintenance on Monday, June 6th at 11:59 p.m. We anticipate the work to last for approximately one hour. Members will not be able to access the SmartHub app to make payments during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Effective June 8th, the night deposit at our Hartford office will no longer be available. The below sign will be posted at the office. You can still make payments by phone, mail, website, or SmartHub app.

During the summer, many people are concerned about staying cool. Whether you rely on a central air-conditioning unit, a fan or a window A/C unit, be aware of safety threats they may pose. Air conditioners and fans are everyday appliances, and knowing how to properly clean, fix and maintain them is important for your safety!

Every spring, schedule professional A/C maintenance to inspect the appliance for any issues that could lead to a fire. In addition to annual maintenance check-ups, change your air filter every 30–60 days. Inspect your outdoor unit periodically to ensure it has proper airflow, remove debris and clean the condenser unit. You can even use a garden hose to periodically clean your condenser coils. (Make sure you turn the breaker off first!)

If you rely on a window A/C unit during the summer, do not plug it into an extension cord or power strip. It should have its own dedicated outlet. Before installing it, make sure the window and frame are in good condition—there should be a metal bracket, mounting rails or some sort of firm support system. If the unit doesn’t fit, do not try and force it. Never put anything on top of the unit.

Since these units are exposed to the elements, they tend to be more at risk for a fire or other dangers. To prevent these risks, never position them where water is or could spill. Clean or replace filters as instructed and continue to inspect cords for damage regularly.

If you fancy a fan to keep you cool, here are some quick safety tips to follow this summer:

• Only purchase fans that have been tested in a recognized, independent lab.
• Check for product recalls at cpsc.gov.
• Double check that air intakes are not blocked.
• Keep fans away from water.

Finally, always be aware of changes in your A/C unit. You should know when something sounds out of the ordinary. If you see wires sticking out of the A/C unit, or if you see leaking refrigerant or hear noises coming from the unit, you should take these as signs of trouble. Don’t wait to contact a professional for help—act immediately!

• The director election opens May 16th and runs through 4:30 p.m. on June 9th.  Members in Districts 3 and 5 will begin receiving ballots today.  Those members who have provided email addresses to Kenergy will receive a ballot both electronically and by mail, however, only one ballot per member is counted.
• Members should not hand-deliver ballots to Kenergy offices. The election is handled by a third party and ballots should be returned in the self-addressed, postage-paid envelope provided. 
• Members should not mail their Kenergy payment in the envelope provided for the ballot return as it will not be received by Kenergy, but will be sent to the third party administrator for the election.
