July 1, 2024 marks 25 years since Green River Electric (organized in 1936) and Henderson-Union Electric Cooperative (organized in 1937) consolidated to become Kenergy Corp. Henderson-Union was the first electric cooperative in Kentucky to sell electricity to a member. Frank T. Street of Cardinal Farms in Henderson County received electricity from the cooperative in October 1937.

Kenergy vowed to continue the legacies of Green River Electric and Henderson-Union Electric Cooperative by providing safe and reliable electricity at an affordable price for our cooperative members. With the consolidation of the two cooperatives, Kenergy serves 14 western Kentucky counties and maintains over 7,200 miles of power lines. We are proud to continue to serve more than 59,000 homes and businesses in our service territory and thank our members for being an integral part of the cooperative family.

Avoid hazards around water and electricity

As farmers gear up for an active summer across the Commonwealth, Kenergy urges extra caution when operating irrigation equipment.

During the spring and summer, farmers often must use irrigation equipment to supplement rainfall, but water and electricity don’t mix. That’s why it’s essential to use safe work practices.

Follow these tips to stay safe:

• Properly select and install equipment. The system should be wired to the standards of the National Electrical Code: It must have disconnect switches; it must use equipment and enclosures suitable for conditions; it must protect wires from physical damage or use jacketed irrigation cable; and it must have circuit and equipment grounding.
• Perform routine maintenance checks. Proactively look for faulty equipment and proper wiring installation.
• Use safe work practices. Turn off the power before working on an irrigation system. Be aware of overhead power lines when working with irrigation pipes, when standing on systems and when spraying water near power lines. Avoid wearing loose clothing and tie back long hair when near rotating equipment.
• Beware of damp environments. Operating pumps and other equipment in damp environment increases the chance of equipment failure. Farmers who are rain-soaked and muddy are much more vulnerable to electric shock.
  
  
• Farm work is rewarding, but it can be dangerous. Following these practices is an important way to stay safe during the busy summer season.

Kenergy has been awarded $10.2 million from Governor Andy Beshear to help fund the Connect, powered by Kenergy project bringing high-speed internet to the electric cooperative’s members. This money will help buildout to 2,353 homes and business in Henderson County and 1,221 homes and businesses in Daviess County.

Governor Beshear presented the check to Tim Lindahl, Kenergy President and CEO on Friday as part of a press conference at Henderson County High School. Lindahl highlighted the critical need for western Kentuckians to have access to high-speed, reliable internet.

“Today’s broadband needs are what electricity was to the commonwealth in the 1930s,” said Tim Lindahl, Kenergy President and CEO. “By installing infrastructure that is owned by the people it serves, giving all of the benefits back to those people, we are on pace with this funding to solve this problem for generations.

Connect, powered by Kenergy is one of the fastest fiber deployment projects in the United States anticipating a full system buildout by the end of 2026.

“We feel like what Kenergy is doing is sparking a broadband transformation in western Kentucky,” Lindahl said. We are grateful for our partnership with Conexon and now the state with this funding opportunity to keep this monumental shift for our communities going.”

The Kentucky Chapter of Women in Rural Electrification (WIRE) is offering three $1,000 scholarships to Kentucky college students. 

The scholarships are open to any applicant who meets the following criteria:

• Student or Student’s family must be served by a Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative.

• Student must have completed at least 60 credit hours at the end of the 2024 spring college term. 

• Student must attend a Kentucky college or university

The scholarship application deadline is June 5, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be notified in July. Download the application here.
